VA Benefits for Seniors

In-Home Care and Financial Support for Veterans

Veterans served our country in times of need. As they reach their senior years, many require additional support to remain safe, independent, and comfortable at home. Fortunately, there are VA benefits for seniors designed to help veterans and their families navigate aging with dignity. However, accessing those benefits can be complicated.

To help clarify the process, we recently invited Jessica Maedgen, Director of VA Benefits at SilverNest Solutions, to speak to our team. She provided a helpful overview of the key benefits available to veterans and their families — and guidance on how to navigate a system that can feel overwhelming.

Understanding VA Benefits for Older Veterans

One of the biggest challenges families face is simply understanding what benefits are available. As Jessica explained, there are several different benefits, each with its own qualifications, application process and purpose.

Among the most important benefits for seniors include:

  • VA pension with Aid and Attendance
  • In-home care through the VA health care system
  • Disability compensation
  • Access to VA health care services
  • Burial benefits are also available at the end of life

While all these programs are critical, two pathways stand out for those veterans who need help remaining safely at home as they age.

In-Home Care Through the VA Health Care System

One of the most valuable—and often overlooked—VA benefits is in-home care through the VA health care system.

The Homemaker and Home Health Aide Care program offers eligible veterans nonmedical assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing and meal preparation in their own homes. These services are designed to help veterans maintain independence while aging in familiar surroundings.

To qualify for VA in-home care services, a veteran must:

  • Be enrolled in the VA health care system
  • Be under the care of a VA physician
  • Receive a referral for home care

A VA social worker then evaluates the veteran’s needs and determines the number of hours required, typically ranging from six to 40 hours per week. Once approved, care is coordinated through an authorized provider, and the agency bills the VA directly — meaning there is no cost to the veteran.

Cambridge Caregivers is proud to serve as an authorized, in-network provider with the Dallas VA Medical Center, making it possible for eligible veterans to receive high-quality, in-home support through this program.

VA Pension with Aid and Attendance

A second key option is the VA Pension with Aid and Attendance, which provides financial assistance to qualifying veterans age 65 and older who need help with activities of daily living. Surviving spouses of veterans may also qualify. Unlike the in-home care benefit through the VA health care system, this program offers a monthly, tax-free payment that can be used for a range of needs, including in-home care or other unreimbursed medical expenses.

For those who qualify, the benefit can be significant — up to $2,424 per month for a single veteran or as much as $2,874 per month for a married veteran, with lower amounts for surviving spouses. This is also a lifetime, tax-free benefit, providing ongoing support as needs evolve.

Eligibility is based on several factors, including:

  • Service history
  • Financial resources
  • Level of need

Veterans must have served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day during a qualifying wartime period, and must have received a discharge other than dishonorable. Importantly, combat service is not required. There are also asset limits—generally around $159,000 excluding the primary residence—though legal strategies may help families navigate those thresholds.

Additional VA Benefits for Seniors

Beyond these two primary pathways for in-home care, veterans may also qualify for disability compensation if they were injured or became ill during military service. This benefit provides a monthly, tax-free payment based on the severity of the condition. In addition, the VA health care system offers access to a wide range of medical services, including primary and specialty care, prescriptions, medical equipment, respite care and hospice.

Need Help Understanding VA Benefits?

Jessica emphasized that identifying and applying for these benefits can feel daunting. The rules are detailed, the paperwork can be extensive, and many families are navigating these decisions during already stressful times.

That’s why having a knowledgeable partner matters.

For veterans over 65 — or their spouses — who need help at home, VA benefits are well worth exploring, even if you don’t think the veteran qualifies. For those unsure where to begin, the Cambridge Caregivers team is happy to help connect families with trusted resources such as SilverNest Solutions, which provides free consultations. From understanding eligibility to connecting with trusted resources, our team is committed to helping veterans and their families access the support they have earned.

After a lifetime of service, no veteran should have to navigate this journey alone.
