Cherishing Memories of Family Members Who Served

Caring for veterans is a team effort at Cambridge Caregivers. And for some members of our team, that work brings back memories of veterans in their own families.

That’s true for writer Mary Jacobs, who creates Cambridge Caregivers’ online content about our work as a VA-authorized provider of in-home care for veterans.

“Writing about our veteran care often brings to mind my dad and the stories he told us around the dinner table when I was a child,” Mary said.

Her father, Homer Jones (1931–2010), served stateside in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War as a flight instructor. For a young man who grew up with five brothers in a small West Virginia town, military service also opened doors.

Homer was among the first in his family to finish high school, and the GI Bill helped him attend college.

“The Air Force offered a battery of aptitude tests for free to anyone who wanted to take advantage of them,” Mary recalled. “Dad took the tests, and the results said he would make a good engineer — so that’s what he did!”

He earned a degree in mechanical engineering and built a career in the field, eventually retiring from Westinghouse Electric Corporation.

Mary also thinks of her grandfather, Edward Hollis Jones (1893–1970), who served in France during World War I.

“He was what they called a ‘doughboy’ — an American infantry soldier,” she said.

Both men received good care near the end of their lives, surrounded by family — something that makes Cambridge Caregivers’ commitment to veterans especially meaningful to Mary.
