The Heart of Caregiving

“I even started my 401(k). That means I’m going to be here. I’ve decided – this is going to be my last job.”

Caregiving is more than just a job, it’s a career—it’s about empathy, patience, and forming meaningful connections. Jessica, a dedicated caregiver at Cambridge Caregivers, shares her journey and what makes her approach unique.

A Personal Approach to Caregiving

The key to being a great caregiver is stepping into the client’s shoes, Jessica said losing independence can be frustrating; she helps clients feel in control of their own home.

“I let them know I’m here to help, not take over,” she says.

By respecting their space and decisions, she builds trust and comfort.

Jessica’s passion for elder care stems from growing up around multiple generations of her family. She spent her childhood listening to stories, baking with her grandmothers, and forming a deep appreciation for older generations. As a Girl Scout, she visited nursing homes, and discovered she loved caring for older people.

Overcoming Challenges in Dementia Care

For times when a client with dementia becomes frustrated or agitated, Jessica has a method she calls “a restart”: She briefly steps out of sight and returns with a fresh approach.

“It’s always new to them when I come back,” she explains. That redirects the conversation and helps turn the client’s focus to something more positive.

One of Jessica’s most memorable experiences: She had a client who believed her late husband had hidden stolen bank money.

“She had old photos, newspaper clippings—who knows, maybe it was true!” Jessica said, laughing.

Another time, she spent days looking for a client’s lost dog, only to learn the pet had passed away years ago. Rather than correcting her, Jessica played along, keeping the client happy.

The Cambridge Caregivers Difference

For Jessica, working at Cambridge Caregivers is unlike any caregiving experience she’s had before. From the moment she joined, she said, felt welcomed and valued—not just as an employee, but as part of a family.

“They office staff know me,” she said. “Other places, you’re just another employee. But here, they remember personal details about you and check in because they genuinely care.”

“Cambridge wants you to succeed. They want you to feel comfortable with the client – you’re not walking in blind.”

What sets Cambridge apart, she explains, is the unwavering support from the team. Whether it’s matching caregivers with the right clients, offering guidance in tough situations, or even coming to her aid during a roadside emergency, Cambridge Caregivers goes above and beyond.

“I like the gatherings where we watch the videos to help with training,” she said. “If you want to further your education, Cambridge supports that. Other companies don’t do that.”

At Cambridge Caregivers, exceptional care starts with exceptional people. By investing in caregivers like Jessica, the company ensures that every client receives the warmth, trust, and consistency they deserve.
