In the middle of a career, retirement may seem like the finish line. But for some, retirement is the beginning of a new, purpose-filled chapter.
In Episode 50 of the Manchester Living Podcast, “Retired with Purpose,” host Brian Levy welcomed two inspiring guests: Bobby Goodman and Mark Lewis, who are redefining retirement through Cambridge Caregivers. After successful careers, both men found renewed meaning by helping others in their later years.
After retiring from his family business, Goodies from Goodman, Dallas native Bobby Goodman realized he yearned for something more meaningful.
“When people asked me what I was doing, I found myself thinking, ‘I wish I had a better answer,’” Bobby said. “There’s only so much golf you can play.”
Bobby found new direction after reconnecting with Adam Lampert, CEO of Cambridge Caregivers. He learned about the company’s mission and stepped into the role of Ambassador. Now he makes connections with people in the community and helps get the word out about Cambridge Caregivers.
“I thought the name ‘Ambassador’ was fabulous,” he said. “I thought the purpose was fabulous. Initially my role was a sort of a walking billboard for the company, but it became so much more. I get to help people navigate this stage of their lives, and that’s a real privilege.”
Bobby is especially happy to align his second career with an organization that reflects his values.
“I’ve spent a lifetime working on my reputation. Cambridge checked all the boxes. They take care of their employees, offer benefits and a 401(k), and truly do things the right way.”
Mark Lewis, a native Houstonian, spent decades in technology sales before retiring. Unsure of what came next, Mark knew he wanted to give back and form genuine one-on-one relationships, something he’d valued in his longtime volunteer involvement with Big Brothers Big Sisters. When he learned about the companionship caregiver role at Cambridge Caregivers, everything clicked.
“I wanted a role that wasn’t corporate and that would let me connect with someone personally,” Mark recalled. “Now I work with a client named Clayton three days a week. We run errands, visit museums and spend time just talking.”
Over the year, Mark and Clayton have built a friendship that both men value deeply.
“We always thank each other for a great day,” Mark says. “I know his family sees me as a trusted companion, and that means everything.”
